Initiative & Institution‘ at London Metropolitan University is occupying the gallery space as a repository for knowledge for the duration of two months. The space houses talks and lectures as well as a 2 day symposium and a publication-in-the-making. ‘Initiative & institution’ is working towards producing and providing content for and by practitioners working between initiatives and institutions, articulating questions and concerns, and proposing methodologies. The thoughts, notes and proposals will be used towards a forthcoming publication, and will be added to issues raised through the conference ‘architecture as initiative’ which took place at the Architectural Association in 2007, with a growing archive of projects and ideas collected through a decade of practice.

The gallery is to be used for a first editing process, as both a manual to, and archive of, thoughts and questions raised throughout the series, and will result in a sketch publication, a draft to be distributed by photocopies on and after the 31st march. The contents of the exhibition/publication are being simultaneously collected and edited as an informal, and open, system in the exhibition space and online. Using the language of self initiated projects like photocopies, emails, texts and images, the exhibition process will be fluid, cumulative, rough and ready.

Progress can be followed online at the ‘Initiative & Institution’ blog, where comments are welcome.
